The Honiara City Council has approved a waste management plan for Central Market, ending months of complaints from vendors who said rubbish was left uncollected for up to a fortnight.
Under the plan, collection will run twice weekly from the first of October, with a dedicated bin bay behind the fish section. Councillors voted eight to two in favour.

The workshop smells of kerosene and nali nut oil. Joel Pana has carved here since 1979, and on a good week three of his pieces leave the lagoon on a boat bound for Honiara.
What has changed is who buys them. Two decades ago the market was the church and the visiting anthropologist. Now it is a cruise itinerary that calls eleven times a year.
Dear Editor,
For six weeks now the trucks have not come past our street. Residents are burning rubbish behind the houses because there is nowhere else to put it. We pay our rates the same as anyone in town.
Can the council say when collection will resume?
